Our verdict

The Vertuo Next is the Vertuo for small kitchens: the full five-size range from 1.35 oz espresso to 14 oz Alto in a 5.5-inch-wide body with Bluetooth and WiFi updates. The 37 oz tank is the honest compromise, refilling noticeably more often than the Vertuo Plus's 60 oz. Buy it when counter width is the binding constraint; buy the Plus when tank capacity is. The direct numbers are in our Vertuo Plus vs Vertuo Next comparison, with both ranked in our best Nespresso machines guide.

What we like

  • 5.5 in width makes it the slimmest Vertuo machine for tight counters
  • Same five cup sizes as the Plus, from 1.35 oz espresso to 14 oz Alto
  • Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity enable automatic software updates
  • Heats in about 25 seconds with Centrifusion extraction

What to watch out for

  • 37 oz water tank needs frequent refills for multi-cup households
  • Smaller used-capsule capacity than the larger Vertuo models
  • Vertuo pods cost more per cup than Original pods

Who it is for

Small-kitchen buyers who want the full Vertuo cup range in the narrowest possible footprint.

Footprint and design

At 5.5 inches wide, the Vertuo Next is the slimmest Vertuo machine here, built for counters where every inch is contested. The trade for the slim body is the 37 oz water tank, which holds barely more than half the Plus's 60 oz. It also brings Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity for automatic software updates, a small but real modernization over the unconnected models.

Brewing performance

Brewing is identical to the Plus: Centrifusion at up to 7000 rpm, barcode-set parameters, five cup sizes from 1.35 oz espresso to 14 oz Alto, and about 25 seconds of heat-up. The slim body changes nothing about the cup. Vertuo's thick, airy crema and consistent results carry over completely.

Daily capacity

The 37 oz tank brews about two and a half 14 oz Altos before refilling, so multi-cup households will know the sink well. The used-capsule capacity is likewise smaller than the Plus's 10-large-capsule bin. For solo drinkers and couples the rhythm is fine; for heavy households it becomes a chore.

How it stacks up

Against the Vertuo Plus, the Next trades capacity for footprint: 37 oz vs 60 oz tank, slimmer used-capsule bin, but a 5.5-inch width and connected updates the Plus does not have. Same coffee, different daily rhythm. Against the Essenza Mini, the comparison crosses lines: Centrifusion mugs vs 19-bar pump espresso, 37 oz tank vs 20.3 oz, and proprietary pricier pods vs cheaper Original pods with third-party choice. Choose the Next for mug-size coffee; choose the Mini for cheaper espresso shots.

Questions, answered

Is the Vertuo Next just a smaller Vertuo Plus?

Mostly yes: same Centrifusion brewing, same five cup sizes, same 25-second heat-up. The differences are the 5.5-inch width, the 37 oz tank vs 60 oz, and the Bluetooth/WiFi connectivity.

Does the connectivity matter?

Modestly. It enables automatic software updates and machine management through the app. It does not change the coffee. Nice to have, not a buying reason on its own.

How many Altos per tank?

About two and a half 14 oz Altos from the 37 oz tank. Espresso drinkers get many more servings per fill; large-mug households refill often.

Next or Plus for an office?

The Plus. Offices punish small tanks, and the Next's 37 oz reservoir would need constant refilling. The Plus's 60 oz tank and larger capsule bin suit shared use far better.
